For a lot of us, the thought of getting up and speaking in front of people is akin to facing a dragon – a daunting challenge that triggers anxiety and fear. If you find yourself trembling and feeling sick at the very thought of talking in a room full (or even not-that-full) of people, you’re not alone. The fear of public speaking is a really common phobia that can be debilitating, and can affect every single one of us.
Avoiding talking to and with people can have profound implications on your personal and professional development. Whether it’s a job interview, a work presentation, or even a social gathering, turning down public speaking engagements can limit opportunities for growth and success.
So, is there anything we can do about it, or are we stuck with this limiting phobia?
Well, I’m here to tell you I work with people just like you, every day, and yes – we will get to the point where you not only approach these situations without trepidation but, dare I say it, even look forward to the opportunity to share your thoughts!
So, where do we start?
- Get professional help!
We can’t do everything by ourselves, and a professional will be experienced in helping people just like you. I take time to understand my clients’ individual challenges so I can provide personalised strategies in a bespoke programme designed around their specific needs.
- Understand the Fear:
For those with a lifelong fear of public speaking, the root cause can often be traced back to early experiences or a combination of factors. Perhaps a humiliating incident in school, a lack of confidence, or an innate predisposition to anxiety could be contributing to this fear. I’m not a therapist, and I won’t take you back to these situations in our sessions – in fact, we don’t even need to discuss them. But understanding fear, and its impact on us, is the first step towards conquering it.
- Learn the Techniques
Understanding that fear is a natural response and that you are not alone in your struggle can be empowering. I will teach you techniques to challenge the unhelpful thoughts and the physical symptoms that are knocking your confidence and building this fear.
- Face the Fear
Like everything, the more we do something, the easier it becomes. During our sessions, you’ll be getting your presentation/interview up on its feet, trying stuff out in a safe and relaxed environment. By the time we’re finished, your brain will have stored these moments as memories – so the next time you speak in front of people it won’t feel anywhere near as daunting, as your brain remembers the feeling of security and calm that you had last time round. This gradual exposure is really empowering and helps desensitise you to the fear.
- Do the work.
Understanding how to prepare – using your time well – will make sure you’re in the best frame of mind for the presentation.
- Strengthen your mindset.
It’s like building muscle at the gym. Once you’ve recognised the thoughts that aren’t doing you any favours, I’ll help you fill that space with much more helpful and constructive thoughts that will get you match-fit.
A fear of public speaking is not a life sentence. With dedication, effort, and the right strategies, you can overcome your fear and unlock your full potential.
